The Yamaha Clavinova CLP-885PE is Yamaha's flagship digital piano and one of many a pianist's favorite choices when it comes to a realistic representation of an acoustic grand piano. A CLP-885 PE (High Gloss Black) stands out through its superior sound quality achieved because of the best sound system in the Clavinova series. The GrandTouch keyboard provides unprecedented natural playing with refined touch, and with the improved operating system it is possible to incorporate even more dynamics into your playing. The CLP-885 is a breathtaking piano that will guarantee many hours of playing pleasure. The piano is also available in matte black (B) and high-gloss white (PWH).
With the more powerful computer power of the 885, it has now become possible to use a greater amount of advanced samples. These samples are actually live recordings of a specific tone, with a specific touch, with the corresponding resonances and mechanical imperfections associated with an acoustic instrument. Under each key are thousands of possible variations of these samples that you hear depending on how you play.
With the improved chips, it is now possible to process an even more realistic sound (more information) directly under your fingers.

Yamaha Clavinova CLP-885 keyboard
The CLP-885 features the GrandTouch keyboard. The GrandTouchTM keyboard is designed to mimic the feel of the keyboard in a grand piano as faithfully as possible. This realism is achieved through solid wood keys, a fantastic synthetic ivory feel coating and matte ebony feel on the black keys.
With the 3 sensor system, the 700 series already allowed effortless rehearsal to be incorporated into piano playing. There was no need to fully lift the key to initiate a new touch. With the new algorithm in the CLP 885, it is now also possible to get the desired dynamics without fully depressing the key, just like on an acoustic grand piano. Thus, your rehearsals will come about even more realistically.
Feeling of a grand piano
The keyboard has a very reliable response, wide dynamic range, escapement action and full graded-hammer action. The solid, dried wood guarantees longevity and unprecedented consistency . The surface of the white keys are synthetic ivory and the black synthetic ebony. The non-slip coating gives you extra control. All in all, the Yamaha CLP-885's keys convey the feel of a real concert grand piano.
Highly expressive
Standard or average keyboards sometimes make it difficult for expression to carry through your music when your finger is at the back end of a key. It takes more effort to depress the key here because this part of the key is close to the lever. The Yamaha Clavinova CLP-885's Grand Touch keyboard has longer keys and the lever is farther back. So you play expressive music much more smoothly with the Yamaha Clavinova CLP-885.
Realistic, graded touch
In an acoustic piano and grand piano, one key weighs more than another because the strings differ in size. This is similarly incorporated in the CLP-885, so the lower notes are weighted heavier than the high ones, as we are used to in an acoustic piano or grand piano.
Counterweights
As the only piano model in the CLP series, the CLP-885 has counterweights in the keys, just like a grand piano. In a grand piano, these weights sit as a counterweight for the hammers and to give you, the pianist, precise control over your playing in pianissimo. These counterweights have been carefully placed in the CLP-885 so that they contribute to a true grand piano experience.
Also, in the CLP-885, the weight, shape, materials and movement of the internal parts have been adjusted to make the resistance in the fingertips even closer to that of one of a grand piano.
Wing sounds from the Yamaha Clavinova CLP-885
The Yamaha Clavinova CLP-885 features binaurally recorded samples from Yamaha's best concert grand, the Yamaha CFX and from the renowned Bösendorfer Imperial. Binaural means that microphones have been used that mimic the position and acoustic perception of the human too. So it gives an even more realistic feeling as if you were really sitting at the playing position of the grand piano.
The tones of the CFX are expressive and lively. The sound of the Bösendorfer is natural, warm and Viennese. The binaural recordings also make longer playing sessions behind your Yamaha Clavinova enjoyable. The sound sounds more spacious, more natural.
Grand Expression Modeling
A grand piano responds to the subtlest of touches; the intensity, speed and depth with which you create music. This Yamaha Clavinova CLP-885 takes your playing input and delicately reflects it in the sounds.
VRM
Virtual Resonance Modeling is the technique Yamaha uses to emulate the resonance of the acoustic instrument. When the strings of the notes being played vibrate, surrounding strings resonate with them. The soundboard and cabinet also resonate along depending on the vibrating strings. And the way depends on the touch and use of the pedals. In the Yamaha Clavinova CLP-885 digital piano, it even mimics the detailed sound the dampers make when taken off the strings.
It is here that the new CLP-885 has received a major upgrade thanks to a more powerful chip. Because we can send more information to the speakers we have an even more detailed representation of the sample and thus an even more truthful experience.
Grand Acoustic Imaging
With specific and new measurement technologies (Grand Acoustic Imaging) and the careful placement of the speakers, the sound distribution of a grand piano is mimicked as much as possible in the Yamaha Clavinova CLP-885. Vibrations of strings, their fading away, the resonance of the grand piano case and the corresponding sense of depth. The sounds sound like this, as if they are coming from the right place of a grand piano.
The placement of the speakers was also very deliberately chosen to take advantage of the acoustics of the cabinet. With 120 years of experience in building acoustic pianos, Yamaha knows the value of good acoustics but also the limitation speakers have in this. It is for this reason that Bidirectional horns for the high frequency and diffusers for the mid and low frequency speakers were used very deliberately. Again to get as close as possible to the sound of an acoustic instrument.
Damper pedal
The Yamaha Clavinova CLP-885 has three pedals: a damper pedal, sostenuto pedal and soft pedal. The damper pedal measures how deeply you press the pedal and applies this to the sound. Half-pedal function is thus also possible. The resistance is realistic, ranging from light to heavier the further you press the pedal.
With the CLP-885, even the physical resistance of this pedal is graded depending on how you press the pedal.
Other sounds
In addition to the sounds of the Yamaha CFX and the Bösendorfer Imperial, the Yamaha Clavinova CLP-885 gives you a choice of 20 accompaniment rhythms. In total, the instrument contains 53 voices, as opposed to the 38 in the other piano models in the series. In addition, you also have 14 Drum/SFX Kits and 480 XG voices.
Among the voices, you'll find four fortepianos, which sets the Yamaha CLP-885 apart from the other piano models in this series. The name fortepiano was given to the first keyboard instruments in the mid-18th century. With CLP-885 you play the fortepianos that Mozart, Chopin, Beethoven and Scarlatti loved to play.
Bluetooth
The Bluetooth connection lets you play music on the Yamaha Clavinova CLP-885. Stream audio such as .mp3 files and play along with your own songs! Because thanks to the powerful speaker system, this is not only a very beautiful piano, but secretly also a high-end hi-fi system.
Recording
With the Yamaha Clavinova CLP-885 you can record music on up to 16 tracks. This allows you to record different parts in turn and combine them into a beautifully full piece of music. You can also save the files to a USB stick to store and share on a computer.
