The NU1XA offers by far the most realistic piano feel of any model Yamaha has to offer, and for a very simple reason. It contains a real hammer keyboard.
Since digital pianos can work with sensors, the need for real hammers is obviously no longer necessary, but this does take something away from the playing experience. The NU1XA brings this all the way back by incorporating a hammered keyboard into a high-energy digital system. With the NU1XA, not only the keys are measured to determine attack and release, but also the hammers. In this way, we create the most realistic response and every nuance of playing is recorded and articulated by the most realistic samples. It doesn't get any closer to the feel of an acoustic piano.
Of course, the NU1XA also includes the renowned CFX and Bösendorfer samples. Yamaha has years of experience in creating extremely realistic samples for their digital pianos. Extremely precise individual notes, sympathetic tones, sound board resonances, even the clicking and creaking of the pedals and the resonances of the duplex scaling are sampled and incorporated into the system. With just one touch, dozens of samples are used in perfect balance to give the most realistic representation of a real grand piano.

Sensors
The NU1XA features the newly developed Articulation Sensor System, which accurately and continuously captures the pianist's subtlest performance nuances via non-contact electromagnetic sensors and Yamaha's patented algorithm. This system uses two separate sensors on each key: one for the mallet - the most crucial part of the acoustic piano sound mechanism - and the other for the key itself, to accurately measure the movement of the fingers' release and precisely articulate the special nuances when the sound stops. Together, they fully capture the player's most delicate expressions.
Pedal
The damper pedal on a grand piano responds with slightly different resistance to the player's foot depending on when the pedal is pressed, when it begins to take effect and when it is depressed. Skilled players usually play differently when they feel these subtle differences in resistance and add their own delicate variations to the tone and sound. Moreover, when the pedal is released, there is a different change in resistance than when it is pressed. The GrandTouchTM pedals have a fulcrum structure similar to that of a grand piano, providing the same expressive and familiar pedal pressure feel and further extending the range of performance.
Resonances
The moment the hammer strikes the strings, the sound is immediately heard by the performer and at the same time the entire instrument resonates, filling the room with a beautiful sound. To faithfully reproduce this unique sound experience of a grand piano, the NU1XA uses a new sound system. It features upward-firing woofers that resonate deeply throughout the instrument and tweeters with a newly designed horn structure that resonate in the high frequencies with the front and back of the instrument. Along with these synergistic resonance effects, the tone quality and sound projection give the player meticulous real-time control over the sound while playing, resulting in an amazingly realistic grand piano-like sound that expands three-dimensionally throughout the performance space.
Grand Expression Modeling
Acoustic pianos have an intricate assembly of internal mechanisms, including hammers, dampers and strings, that interact with each other extensively as they respond to delicate variations in the player's touch. The Grand Expression Modeling technology in the NU1XA accurately simulates this complex interplay between player and instrument, reproducing the same boundless tonal variation of a grand piano. In addition to using your finger power for expression, from pressing a key to releasing it, you can also create changes in timbre based on the speed and depth with which the keys are pressed - providing the pleasure of a full-fledged performance, perfectly reproducing all the fine nuances you envision while playing.
Virtual Resonance Modeling
Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM) technology faithfully reproduces the extraordinarily complex resonances in a grand piano created by the sympathetic vibrations of the strings and soundboard. These sympathetic tones are added according to the timing and intensity of your keystrokes and pedals, expanding your palette of timbres for even greater expressive variety.
Bineural Sampling
When playing the NU1XA with headphones and when you don't want to disturb anyone, such as at night, you don't have to sacrifice any of the luxuriously rich piano sounds. By using special microphones at the player's position when recording piano samples, Binaural Sampling technology effectively reproduces the sensation of hearing an acoustic piano in front of you as you play. The technology was used on both the Yamaha CFX and the Bösendorfer Imperial Voices. The resulting sound is so natural and enveloping, you'll even forget you have headphones on while you play.
The NU1XA features four additional piano voices that authentically reproduce the sound of the "fortepiano" of the 1700s and 1800s. This allows you to experience the characteristic sounds of the pianos of the era in which famous composers such as Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin lived and to better understand the intentions of the composers of the time.
Modern features
Download the free Smart Pianist app on your smartphone or tablet, connect it to the NU1XA via Bluetooth® and enjoy the powerful features and intuitive control you have over the instrument's various functions and operations - all while looking at your smart device's screen. You can select the built-in Voices while seeing realistic illustrations of each instrument, and you can use the metronome and tuning buttons with greater ease. The NU1XA is also compatible with Bluetooth® Audio. Wirelessly connect your smart device to the instrument and enjoy playing along with song data streamed from the device.
Elegant design
"With graceful curves from the side arms to the legs, the NU1XA evokes timeless beauty while exuding the elegance of an acoustic piano. Moreover, the height is reduced, so you can place the piano in almost any room without feeling cramped or confined. The shiny, mirrored touch rail reflects your hands and the keys in the same way as a grand piano, adding an opulent visual presence and enhancing your enjoyment of playing.
The NU1XA has a beautiful but unassuming touch-sensitive control panel that allows you to easily control various basic functions of the instrument, including Voice selection, reverb adjustment and metronome control. When not in use, the display panel turns off and virtually disappears, making the whole thing look even more like an acoustic piano, further enhancing your playing enjoyment."
