The N1X offers by far the most realistic piano feel of any model Yamaha has to offer, and for a very simple reason. It has a real hammer-action keyboard.

Since digital pianos can work with sensors, the need for real hammers is obviously no longer necessary, but this does take something away from the playing experience. The N1X brings this all the way back by incorporating a hammer keyboard into a high-energy digital system. With the N1X, not only the keys are measured to determine attack and release, but also the hammers. In this way, we create the most realistic response and every nuance of playing is recorded and articulated by the most realistic samples. It doesn't get any closer to the feel of an acoustic piano.

Of course, the N1X also includes the renowned CFX and Bösendorfer samples. Yamaha has years of experience in creating extremely realistic samples for their digital pianos. Extremely precise individual notes, sympathetic tones, sound board resonances, even the clicking and creaking of the pedals and the resonances of the duplex scaling are sampled and incorporated into the system. With just one touch, dozens of samples are used in perfect balance to give the most realistic representation of a real grand piano.

Prefer playing with headphones? Bineural samples have been recorded specifically for headphone use to give the player the feeling of sitting at the playing position of the grand piano.

Experience the responsiveness and playing feel of authentic acoustic grand piano action

To express yourself musically, you need to form a physical connection with the instrument. In the case of the AvantGrand series, it starts with real wooden keys with a comfortable touch. Next comes the all-important keyboard mechanism, which the AvantGrand series inherited from Yamaha's famous grand pianos. Under the fingers, you feel exactly the same weight and exactly the same responsiveness, the same range for expression. To record every nuance of your playing, Yamaha uses a non-contact system with optical sensors, so it doesn't affect the playing experience or the mechanics in any way. Below each key is a stepless optical sensor that records the speed at which and the depth to which that key is pressed. An additional optical sensor attached to each hammer handle measures the timing of and force with which the hammer strikes the virtual "strings. This information is instantly translated into beautiful authentic sound reproduction. The more you play, the more you find yourself becoming one with the piano.

Two world-class grand pianos in one

As for judging the piano sound, that depends mostly on personal taste. To help you realize the sound palette you desire, Yamaha offers a choice of two world-class grand pianos in one - each with its own unique character to convey the emotion you want to express through a piece of music. At the touch of a button on the AvantGrand N1X, you can choose the authentic sounds sampled from a Yamaha CFX concert grand piano or a Bösendorfer Imperial. As Yamaha's flagship grand piano, the majestic CFX features a wide palette of timbres, from sparkling high notes to powerful bass. The legendary Bösendorfer, meanwhile, is known for its sonorous and rich Viennese sound. In either case, the lifelike sounds of the AvantGrand N1X allow you to explore the outer limits of your expressive imagination.

Spatial acoustic sampling, spatial acoustic speaker system

With the introduction of the AvantGrand, Yamaha revolutionized the approach to sampling and reproducing the notes of the actual acoustic grand piano. By approaching the vocal floor not simply as a sound source, but as a support surface, we took samples at four positions, allowing us to add optimal middle and back positions to the traditional left and right. Furthermore, the AvantGrand's speaker system is designed so that the sound is best heard from the playing position. A three-way speaker system with woofer and mid and high speakers meticulously reproduce the rich natural resonance of the vocal floor. In addition, each of the low, mid and high frequency bands has its own amplifier to avoid interference between the frequency bands. This innovative configuration allows the instrument's extraordinary sound system to reproduce the nuances of each individual note. For even better sound precision, the speaker setup is optimized for the size of the instruments.

Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM)

In a grand piano, strings and sound resonate throughout the instrument's cabinet, resulting in rich sound reflections that envelop the listener with sound. Not only do the strings you play vibrate, but the other strings begin to sound in response to the strings you play. This is why piano sound is so complex and rich.

This phenomenon is perfectly reproduced in the AvantGrand N1X via Virtual Resonance Modeling (VRM), which calculates the different stages of the strings for each of the keyboard's 88 keys from one moment to the next. As a result, the N1X reproduces the endless number of factors inherent in playing an acoustic piano, such as which keys are played, the force with which the keys are played and the timing of pedal use.

The authentic experience of a grand piano pedal

The N1X is equipped with a damper pedal that reproduces the subtle changes in resistance you experience when using a grand piano pedal. In addition, the N1X's damper pedal allows you to use the same half-pedal techniques as you would with a grand piano, giving you detailed control over sustain and reverb.

A fully enveloping headphone experience

Thanks to advanced bi-aural sampling technology*, the sound you hear through the headphones is remarkably lifelike. This technology uses piano samples recorded with special microphones to capture positional information and other nuances distinguished by the human ear. The resulting sound is so lifelike, so enveloping, that you soon forget you even have headphones on. (*Only with the voice CFX Grand)

The distinctive elegant lines of a Yamaha grand piano

The N1X beautifies any room with the unique, refined curves of an acoustic grand piano, despite being a much more compact musical instrument. No detail has been overlooked to ensure that it looks and feels like a real grand piano, whether you're enjoying the lush tones from a distance or taking a seat and playing for yourself.

Intelligent UX and integration

Behind its simple control panel, the N1X offers a plethora of connectivity options for maximum functionality and integration with external devices. It can connect directly to computers and mobile devices via USB, sound and recording systems via audio cables, act as a Bluetooth receiver and integrate with iOS apps via Wi-Fi.
