Compared to tube microphones, solid-state microphones like the Warm Audio WA-47jr are prized for their detailed sound and resistance to distortion. These are the reasons why transformerless FET microphones with a U47-style capsule are so popular for kick drums and other percussion instruments. So the WA-47jr shines on percussion, of course. Yet it's also a good choice for acoustic instruments where capturing fast transients is critical, and it should be on your list of microphones to test for vocalists, electric guitar cabs and more. Perhaps the more pertinent question is: what isn't it great on?
Three polar patterns, you can go either way with that!
The WA-47jr's three polar patterns - cardioid, omni and figure-8 - give you impressive flexibility when exploring different recording techniques. Cardioid, with its moderate side rejection and almost complete rear rejection, is useful for just about any studio task. Omni is ideal for recording room ambience along with the source. Use a figure-8 technique to overdub a sax with natural slap or to record two singers with one microphone (be sure to pay attention to balance). And with two of these mics, you can use stereo techniques such as spaced pair (A/B), XY (including Blumlein), ORTF array and mid-side (M-S).
WA-47Jr, but why?
Every studio needs at least one pair of high-quality large-diaphragm condenser microphones, and you can use the WA-47jr on everything. It's great for vocals, acoustic guitars, double basses, electric guitars and bass cabs, piano, drums and percussion, strings, brass, woodwinds and any other source you want to use. Given its great price, it wouldn't even be such a crazy idea to purchase two for recording tracks in stereo!
