El Capistan, arguably the most popular pedal in the entire Strymon collection. And that says a lot about how awesome it sounds because still, this tape echo simulator is pretty specific and has some specific features. El Capistan mimics not only the sound (including all the wonderful imperfections), but also how a tape echo works. Not a simple, low-threshold delay pedal!

A tape echo works on the basis of one recording head and (usually) playback heads along which a tape runs. The distance of the heads in relation to each other and the speed of the tape determine how the echo sounds. In itself a simple concept, but there are quite a few variations on that principle. You can -as a basic setting of El Capistan- choose between fixed, multi or single tape head applications and for each setting of the tape head you can select three variations / modes. Within this pallet of settings you have access to various delay rhythms (including dotted 8's), multi head settings and sound-on-sound mode.
And then there is the aspect of a tape echo of inherent imperfections such as tape wear and mechanical anomalies that create a specific character of this type of echo. With tape age and "wow & flutter," El Capistan allows you to recreate the degree of wear beautifully and very faithfully. But in this context there is more, because there are quite a few "secondairy functions" aboard this pedal that allow you to simulate "low end contour," "tape bias" and "tape crinkle."
But that's not all. El Capistan also has a spring reverb and a +/- 3db boost / cut on board, tap tempo and can be used in full stereo (stereo in and out).
