The Radial JDI is a passive direct box designed to handle loud signal levels without any distortion. Unlike an active DI (which is limited by the buffer amplifier's rail voltage), the JDI uses a Jensen audio transformer. Jensen transformers are legendary for how they handle transients while delivering a smooth, warm-sounding Bessel curve reminiscent of the best vintage gear. The JDI has a flat, linear response from 10 Hz to 40 kHz and a phase deviation of virtually zero, delivering the natural, pure sound of the instrument with no ambient noise.
The 100% passive circuit in the JDI is highly efficient. The transformer simultaneously performs high to low impedance conversion and signal balancing with minimal load and does so without any power consumption. The transformer also introduces a magnetic bridge that allows signal through while rejecting DC voltage. This makes the JDI particularly strong at eliminating hum and buzz caused by ground loops.
The JDI features ¼" input and pass connectors, -15dB input pad, ground elevator and 180º degree polarity reversal to bring the instrument into phase with the PA. A secondary circuit is added for direct interfacing to high output power devices such as guitar or bass amplifier speakers, plus a unique merge function that allows stereo sources such as keyboards to be merged into mono, saving valuable input channels.
Built tough to handle live touring, the JDI has a steel inner frame and a unique book-end outer jacket. The innovative design eliminates stress on the PCB, reducing the chance of solder joints becoming 'cold', while the outer casing creates a protective zone around the switches and connectors. The steel housing is resistant to noise-causing electromagnetic pollution, and the sensitive interior of the transformer is further protected from magnetic fields with a MuMETAL® tube. As a result, signal transmission is quiet and free of hum.
