The U 87 is probably the best known and most widely used Neumann studio microphone. It has a large dual-diaphragm capsule with 3 directional patterns: omnidirectional, cardioid (kidney) and figure of 8. These characteristics are selectable with a switch under the grill (so-called head grill). This microphone sounds really great and has the real natural, pure Neumann sound.
The 10 db attenuation filter is on the back; therefore, the microphone can also handle loud sound pressure (up to 127 dB without distortion)
Also, the low can be compensated against the proximity effect (switchable on-off).
