The TLM 170 R is perhaps our most universal microphone. Over a huge dynamic range, it offers remarkably linear frequency response, both on-axis and off-axis, in each of its five polar patterns. Thus, the TLM 170 R can capture the natural sound of any source, including the ambience of the room, without providing its own sonic imprint. Moreover, the directionality of the microphone can be controlled remotely via the optional N248 PSU.
The TLM 170 R was designed with high resolution in mind. As early as 1983, it achieved a huge dynamic range of 130 dB. It was the first microphone to use Neumann's fet 100 technology with a transformerless output stage that ensures sonic transparency and powerful bass transmission even at the highest signal levels.
The K89 capsule
Its sonic transducer is no less impressive. The double-diaphragm K89 capsule offers high linearity in every respect: smooth frequency response, fast transient response and frequency-independent polar patterns. Even the diffuse field response remains uncolored for all polar patterns, which is crucial in reverberant environments.Wide Application
The TLM 170 R is an excellent microphone for orchestral recordings and can be used both as a main microphone and as a spot microphone. At the same time, the TLM 170 R is an excellent microphone for vocals and speech, capturing the human voice in its natural beauty. With its own noise of only 14 dB, the TLM 170 R can be used for delicate sounds without adding unwanted hiss. At the same time, it can handle extremely loud sources of 154 dB SPL using the -10 dB pre-attenuation switch. A second switch activates a 100 Hz low cut. A rotary switch allows five polar patterns to be selected: omni, wide cardioid, cardioid, hypercardioid and figure 8. In the sixth position, patterns can be controlled remotely from the optional N248 PSU.No special cables are required because the pattern control works through Neumann's voltage detection scheme: the phantom voltage is varied within the allowable range of ± 4 V of the P48 standard. The TLM 170 R sets its pattern based on the absolute voltage, while other microphones remain unaffected. There may be no such thing as a perfect microphone, but the TLM 170 R comes pretty close: It combines the sonic precision and linearity of a small-diaphragm microphone with the smoothness and flexible pattern control of a classic large-diaphragm microphone.
