The Milab DC-196 studio condenser microphone is a true all-around studio condenser microphone. It is built around the latest version of Milab's rectangular capsule (the 2900). Because of its rectangular capsule, this microphone is ultra compact and small to build. Very practical if you need to discreetly conceal this microphone (e.g. in a live sound application with orchestra or for a TV broadcast).
A fine feature of the 2900 microphone capsule is its wide off-axis response. Due to the capsule design, the microphone has -horizontally viewed- a very wide, consistent reproduction. While seen vertically, the sound is actually somewhat slightly attenuating. It is therefore ideal for reducing annoying indirect noise from a ceiling or floor.
The microphone has very low self-noise, selectable patterns (cardioid, omni, bidirectional), excellent SPL handling and an extremely wide off-axis response. And all in a very compact size, as the DC-196 one of the smallest large-diaphragm microphones ever produced! The DC-196 shines on transient-rich sources such as acoustic instruments and (thanks to the unique characteristics of the rectangular capsule) it excels in recording situations where a wide off-axis response is crucial, such as with string ensembles and choirs, as well as stereo setups such as X/Y and Blumlein where large-diaphragm microphones are usually avoided.
Looking for a large-diaphragm microphone with a small form factor? Then the DC-196 is ideal. A DC-196 will meet the needs of even the most demanding recording engineers.
